Legislative

Local, state and national advocacy is a critical part of CCOVA's mission.

This is a partial list of our activities and successes:

  • DRUG COURTS / VA - succeeded in advocating for drug courts in the Virginia state budget for the next fiscal year.  Encouraged legislators to maintain funding at previous budget levels.
  • DRUG COURTS / FEDERAL - met with representatives of Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner to advocate for continued federal support of drug courts.  The federal budget recently released includes $68 million in new funds for drug courts.
  • AGE 21 MINIMUM DRINKING AGE - presented evidence and a strong case to the Virginia senators as the importance of keeping the legal minimum drinking age at 21.
  • PREVENTION WORKS POWERPOINT PRESENTATION - in response to the Joint Legislative Action Review Committee (JLARC) CCOVA members prepared a Prevention Works presentation to insure that all general assembly members fully understand that prevention saves lives and improves the quality of life.  click here to view the presentation

CCOVA members meet with representatives of Senators Webb & Warner on February 10, 2009 in Washington to reinforce the success of prevention efforts in Virginia and to push for drug court support and keeping the legal drinking age at 21.
